California Wabi-Sabi
To complement a stunning home remodel, this young family sought a unique landscape design with a wabi-sabi feel, blending simplicity, natural/raw materials and an appreciation of the cycles of life. To play off the modern home design, surprising shapes and angles were incorporated into the design. Diagonal cut lines in the concrete and natural tree stumps add a playful touch to the neighborhood gathering space in the front garden. Elegant tufts of Chondropetalum, a majestic yellow Cordyline and the delightful Robinia ‘Twisty Baby’ add further charm.
In the small back garden, a cohesive design brings together children’s play space, adult entertainment options, and a large shed making use of every corner. A large, inviting black Basalt patio with firepit serves as the focal point to the intimate garden. The staggered border between the artificial turf and Basalt stone patio pavers adds interest and mirrors the architectural surprises of the remodel. Horizontal slat wood fencing surrounds the garden and provides a sense of intimacy, while lush and varied leaf textures and hues of green provide softness and elegance to this compact gem of a garden.
