Once upon a time, this small front yard was little more than a patch of lawn under the shade of a mature Chinese Evergreen Elm. Then a diagonal path of black basalt was laid to provide a more inviting route from sidewalk to front door. In a variety of cuts and finishes, basalt also forms the retaining walls, birdbath and seating, providing a solid framework for planting beds. The plant selection, highlighted by bronze foliage, soft grasses, and purple-flowering shrubs, was inspired by the warm colors found in a watercolor painting.
